The large stone mass of the Saunasampo Smart Sauna Heater acts both as a heat storage and a heat exchanger. When the lid is closed, the heater functions as a heat storage unit, and when the lid is open, it works as a heat exchanger that transfers the heat stored in the stones into the sauna.
The heater heats the air rather than the materials themselves; consequently, the sauna’s surface materials remain in good condition for significantly longer, energy is saved, and the steam produced is soft and moist. During the heating phase, the heater’s lid remains closed, resulting in an average energy saving of 50% compared to traditional continuously heated sauna stove models.

Saunasampo Älykiuas on maailman ensimmäinen varaava sähkökiuas
Keksijä Tapio Yli-Kovero patentoi kiukaan vuonna 1987. Se esiteltiin Tampereen keksintömessuilla vuonna 1990. Tuohon aikaan kiukaissa oli yleisimmin 20 kg, maksimissaan 40 kg oliviini-diabaasikiuaskiviä. Joissain laitoskiukaissa saattoi olla 60 kg kiviä. Pienen kivimäärän takia saunan piti olla polttavan kuuma, ettei löylyt lopu kesken.
Älykiukaan 200-300 kg kivimäärä mullisti sähkökiuasmarkkinat; oli mahdollista valmistaa sähkökiuassauna, joka ei ollut polttavan kuuma, vaan mahdollisti kosteat leppeät löylyt. Älykiukaan patentin takia muissa niin sanotuissa aina valmiissa kiukaissa ei ole puhallinta, mikä rajoittaa niiden käyttöalueen pieniin saunoihin.
Ensimmäiset Älykiukaat asennettiin vuonna 1994. Ensimmäisten kiukaiden joukossa oli Hämeenlinnassa Hotelli & Resort Vanajanlinnan kiuas, joka on edelleen käytössä. Älykiukaita on myös Suomen Eduskunnan saunoissa, joista 2 kansanedustajille ja 2 henkilökunnalle.
Fyysisesti ja toiminnallisesti Älykiuas ei ole oleellisesti muuttunut. Ainoa ulkoinen muutos on kannen muutos alumiinivalusta karkaistuksi lasiksi. Ohjauselektroniikka on kehittynyt releohjauksesta ohjelmoitavan logiikan kautta digitaaliseksi.
Kestävyyden ja siisteyden takia kiukaassa on siirrytty käyttämään lähes yksinomaan Kerkesin valmistamia keraamisia kiuaskiviä.
Saunasammon Älykiuas sopii erinomaisesti saunoihin, joilla on iso käyttöaste, tai joita käytetään usein, ja joissa saunojia on pitkin päivää. Tällaisia ovat esimerkiksi pelastusasemat, golf-kentät, poliisilaitokset, hotellit, kuntosalit ja liikuntakeskukset, asunto-osakeyhtiöt ja työpaikat, joissa on paljon väkeä.
